Race Classes / Staging

Race classes at a club level do not follow a standardised format from club to club. But when you start to venture to other clubs for some variety the club will happily advise a suitable class.

The deciding factors to consider when choosing your class is your age, bike size and skill level. Male and female classes run separately in high level events, but both genders can be merged into one on race night depending on numbers.

Each race is called a "moto" and there's a total of 5 races each night, so 5 moto's. The race format is very similar from club to club and follows a consecitive 3 moto's in a row then a break to allow a recharge, food water and/or coaching advice and then the remaining 2 moto's to finish of the night.

This means after the 1st race riders will go straight back to staging and await their gate number for the next race/motto 2 times before a nice break of around 20 30min then repeat for the last 2 races/mottos.

Staging is held behind the starting gate and this is where each rider is given their lane number for each of their races/mottos - BMX tracks allow up to 8 riders at once and each lane is numbered 1-8 sequentally. Parents are certainly welcome to be in this area to support their little BMX star understand what is acutally happing.

Maitland uses a very easy to follow format, most new riders will fit into one of these classes by age:

  1. Mini wheelers = for the new riders usually under 5
  2. 4-5 Sprocket
  3. 6-7 Sprocket
  4. Novice Girls 8-12
  5. Novice boys 8-12
  6. 8-9
  7. 10-12
  8. 13-16
  9. 17+
  10. Men’s open
  11. Womens Open
